EndNote X9

You can search a number of online resources from within EndNote X9. Searching online databases via EndNote is a good way to get specific references into your library quickly.

In the My Library pane, you might already have some resources such as PubMed or Web of Science saved in the group set Online Search. You will only see Online Search, with a list of online resources, if you are viewing your library in Online Search or Integrated mode. Find out more about library modes.

If the resource you wish to search is displayed, click on it.

To see other resources to search, click on more… at the bottom of your Online Search group. Alternatively go to the Tools menu and select Online Search to select from a list of databases/catalogues. 

• When you select an online resource to carry out a search, the Search panel will be automatically displayed in the upper middle section of your screen.
• Enter your search criteria and then click on Search.
• The number of results retrieved will be displayed. Click on OK to import them.

If you are in Integrated Library & Online Search Mode, your results will be added directly to your library. They will appear in both All References and the appropriate online search group.

If you are in Online Search Mode (Temporary Library) the references are stored temporarily. You can then look at each reference before deciding which ones to keep. To keep references, you need to add them to your library:

• Select the references you want by highlighting them, or go to the Edit menu and Select All to keep all of them.
• From the References menu select Copy References To and then select your library, or use the Copy to Local Library toolbar icon.
• To see your library with the copied references in it, click on the Local Library Mode.
• The copied references are shown in the Copied References group. They are also within All References. Each time you copy references into your library, the copied references group is overridden with the new copied references.

Please note, many of the resources available to search from within EndNote require authentication, which is not possible to set up via UCL's authentication routes. You should always be able to search PubMed, Jisc Library Hub and other library catalogues, as they are freely available resources. You will be able to search Web of Science when accessing EndNote on a computer connected directly to the UCL network, not connected remotely and not from your own home personal computer.

There are three ways to view your EndNote library. You can change the view using the three icons in the top left corner of your library:

• Local library mode (folder icon): This mode shows only your open (local) EndNote library, with all your references and groups.
• Online search mode (globe icon): This mode hides your local library references and groups. It shows a temporary preview library where you can do online searching, examine the results, and select the references from your search results you want to keep. You can then copy the references you want to keep to your permanent local library.
• Integrated library and online search mode (globe with folder icon): This mode shows both your local library and online search options. If this mode is used to search online, all retrieved references are automatically imported into your library and you must delete references you do not want to keep.

To search for resources from within EndNote you will need to be in either the Online Search Mode or the Integrated Library & Online Search Mode 

If you want to carry out a subject search of an online database, it is usually best to go directly to the database itself to carry out your search, as you then may have the option to search by subject headings and will have many more search features to help you carry out an effective search.
