The EBSCOhost interface provides access to a range of databases, e-journals and e- books. The databases are particularly useful for identifying journal articles and other publications on a particular topic within the subject areas covered by each database.
It is possible to select and search more than one database at the same time. However, doing this will disable the thesaurus feature and so it is not advised for comprehensive or systematic searching.
This guide is for the classic EBSCOhost interface, available to NHS users until 1 December 2025.
UCL users should see our guide to the new EBSCOhost databases interface, launched August 2025.
For NHS staff, accessing EBSCOhost database through NHS England OpenAthens, the switch to the new interface will happen later this year. Action needed: if you have set up a personal account you will need to take action now to save your searches; you can link to some instructions below.
ERIC - a key indexing database for education and the social sciences - is undergoing significant changes whose full implications aren't clear yet.
At this stage it appears that new content will continue to be indexed and no existing content will be removed unless it is retracted by its publisher.
The US Institute of Education (IES) is currently estimating the volume of content which will be indexed next year and will share further information in due course (last updated 4th July 2025).
