Key journals in your subject area

Colourful pile of magazines.

Most journals are available electronically. They can be found by searching UCL Explore

Print journals (also referred to as periodicals) cannot be borrowed. Recent issues are available in the Ophthalmology library while older volumes are kept at STORE and need to be ordered in advance via our Stores service.

What are journal articles?
Journals are a key source of information.
•    Like books, they come in print and electronic-only formats;
•    Unlike books, they are published regularly and contain succinct research reports from many different authors.
Evidence-based practice is an essential component of being a health professional. Academic journals are a significant tool enabling the constant updating of the evidence base, so it's important you get to grips with finding and evaluating their contents. Use the resources on this page to learn  how to find articles on your topic.

How do I find journal articles?
UCL subscribes to an extensive range of journal titles. You can searrch using Explore on the right column on this page to see if we have access to a journal title (either electronically or in print) and then find a particular article within the relevant volume and issue. Watch the video from the box on the right column to find out how to do this, and then use the Explore search box to have a go yourself.

Access to online journals for Moorfields NHS staff

Moorfields NHS staff can access the Browse Journals list including the 70+ ophthalmology online journals with an OpenAthens account from the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub website for full-text articles. If the full-text is not available a request can be sent to the library staff.

NHS staff can also visit the library and access the full-text to UCL online collections by using the Explore Access Point computers.

Visit this page for further information about electronic resources for NHS staff and students.

Finding the full-text

Find IT@UCL logo

If you're using one of our databases to find journal articles, you might not be able to read the article within the database itself. If you see the Findit@UCL icon, click on it to link to the full-text

Sometimes you will see a link to the publisher's site. Unless the article is open access, you might find that you can't reach the full-text.

Clicking on the Findit@UCL link instead will link you to the full-text via UCL's subscription access, if available.

If you're using Google Scholar you can set up the Library Links feature so that it will display a findit@UCL link to help show you which articles are available via UCL subscriptions.

Can't find full-text?

UCL has an amazing collection of electronic resources, but no library can have full-text access to everything. If you identify a piece of information that would be beneficial to your research, the library will source a copy for you via the Inter Library Loans (ILLs) service available through Explore. Click on the 3 dots (...) at the top of the page to find the ILLs form.
