Education (Curriculum Resources and Initial Teacher Education)

Books and e-books

The Curriculum Resources Collection has resources for young people across the school-age ranges.  The collection provides a broad and diverse range of high quality material that supports the learning and teaching across the curriculum, reading for pleasure, literacy, and personal and holistic development.  It is made up of the following, discrete collections of books:

Picture books: a broad and wide range of picture books for primary aged children, including board books.

Fiction: from illustrated, first chapter books to young adult fiction and A-level texts.  This collection also includes graphic novels and fiction in verse.

Folktales: a collection of folk tales and myths.

Reading schemes: examples of reading schemes for literacy, used in the primary school classroom.

Children’s Book Corner: a curated collection for primary-school classroom reading.

Non-fiction: covering subjects across the curriculum, and a broad range of extra-curricular topics, including titles of general and personal interest for young people.  Also includes subject textbooks.

Basic Skills collection: materials funded by the the Basic Skills Agency (BSA).

Graded readers: aimed at secondary students, particularly for those with reading difficulties and adult literacy students.  Includes series written for English learners.

The collection reflects resources used in English schools, and so the bulk of the collection is from UK educational and children's publishers, with material also from mainstream charities, voluntary groups, and other relevant organisations.

The library catalogue is the principal tool to find books, journals and other materials (either in print or in electronic format) held in UCL libraries. On the catalogue, you will find the details of the item including the location of the materials you are looking for: library site, collection and shelfmark.

United States Board on Books for Young People’s (USBBY) Outstanding International Books list

These latest additions to the Curriculum Resources Collection are titles from the United States Board on Books for Young People’s (USBBY) Outstanding International Books list for 2025.  The list seeks to identify:

international books that are deemed most outstanding of those published during the calendar year. For the purposes of this honor list, the term "international book" is used to describe a book published or distributed in the United States that originated or was first published in a country other than the U.S.

You can find the list of titles on this page, and the (US-based) School Library Journal's article about the selection here.  What this brings is a rich selection of interesting books published from around the world, and with it a broad and diverse range of stories and voices to our collection.

The book carousel below features the covers of each of the 38 titles, each of which will link you to the record for that item in our holdings.
