To get started with using UCL's libraries, resources and services, first complete our Getting Started with UCL Library Services: online induction.

Once you have completed the induction, it's time to start thinking about the skills you need to make the most of library resources and contribute to your academic success.

In this guide to Library Skills Essentials, we introduce you to some fundamental knowledge and skills you will need that form the foundations of all the other library skills. 

Your first steps include:

• Knowledge of different formats of information, including primary and secondary information. See Types of information.
• Understanding and knowledge of key resources available to find different types of information. Particularly important when you are getting started are Explore and the library webpages and Reading Lists.

The following videos are recordings of online sessions which introduce the skills required to undertake the library research process and outline the guidance, training and support available at UCL to enable students to develop those skills.
