Subject Collections

The Ancient History collection is located on the 1st floor of the UCL Main Library and contains books on the history of the Ancient Near East, Greece & Rome, Byzantium, and the early Christian Church and is arranged geographically by region.

The works of the ancient historians are located in the Classics collection. For books on the history of Egypt in the early and Pharaonic periods you should refer to the Egyptology collection at the Institute of Archaeology.

Our print collections are complemented by an extensive range of online resources. The key resources in this subject area are:

Acta Sanctorum
The Acta Sanctorum is a collection of documents examining the lives of saints, organised according to each saint's feast day, and runs from the two January volumes published in 1643 to the Propylaeum to December published in 1940
Annee Philologique, L'
Index of articles and papers in the area of classical studies. Can be searched by ancient or modern author, by subject area, plus other search types.
Context of Scripture Online
A reference work focused on the study of the Bible and the ancient Near East, it provides access to a collection of Ancient Near Eastern texts that have an impact on the interpretation of the Bible. Accessibility statement for Brill Scholarly Editions.
Jacoby Online
Felix Jacoby’s Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker is a collection of ancient Greek historic texts that were lost, except for fragments (citations, extracts and summaries) found in other sources. Most entries in Jacoby Online focus on a lost author, but some entries contain anonymous fragments on a particular era or region, or even a single fragmentary text from a papyrus or manuscript.
New Pauly Online
Brills New Pauly is a reference work for students and scholars of the ancient world, together with the complete original Der Neue Pauly. Covers Graeco-Roman antiquity and its aftermath, including the history of classical scholarship.
Patrologia Latina
Jacques-Paul Migne's Patrologia Latina comprises the works of the Church Fathers from Tertullian in 200 AD to the death of Pope Innocent III in 1216. The database contains the complete Patrologia Latina, including all prefatory material, original texts, critical apparatus and indexes. Migne's column numbers, essential references for scholars, are included.
Translated Texts for Historians E-Library
Access to 50 volumes: Vol. 1-20; 22-52. The translated Texts for Historians E-Library makes available historical sources from A.D. 300–800 translated into English.
