EBSCOhost databases

Guide to using EBSCOhost databases (new interface launched August 2025)

The new search interface on Business Source Ultimate and EconLit

EBSCO recently launched a new search interface for their business and economics databases which is different from the regular interface described in the rest of this guide. It contains the familiar features of other EBSCOhost databases, but it is a better experience for business and economics researchers. Researchers in these subject areas use secondary research publication types such as market research reports, SWOT analyses, economic data sets, case studies etc, as well as academic literature. It is easier to locate these different publication types using the new search interface.

This page provides guidance for researchers on how to search and find these publication types effectively. It uses screenshots from the Business Source Ultimate database to provide guidance, but EconLit also works in the same way.

Finding leading business academic journals and magazines quickly

To search either Business Source Ultimate or EconLit in the new search interface described below, please make sure you access the database from either the A-Z databases guide or from any subject guide.

It's easy to discover leading academic journals that are available in Business Source Ultimate. In the first section of the new search interface you can delve quickly into accounting and finance, management, marketing and sales, management information systems (MIS) and production and operations management (POM) journals. Clicking into any of these categories reveals highly-reputable, academic journals in these areas of research.

Similarly, you can find popular business magazines quickly from the top of the new search interface. Clicking on business magazines reveals publications such as Harvard Business Review and Bloomberg Business Week.

Browsing for different publication types

It is easy to find and navigate to the different secondary research publication types. Scroll down the homepage of Business Source Ultimate and look at the section Explore featured content.

You will see that there are different secondary research publication types available and easy ways to discover content:

  • Company profiles by country.
  • Company profiles by industry.
  • Country reports.
  • Industry reports.
  • SWOT analyses.
  • Case studies.
  • Executive interview transcripts.
  • Pathways to research: business and economics.
  • Ahead-of-print articles.
  • News.

You can drill down into these publication types and then find a PDF file of the report. You can save or download this. In this example, we will look for country reports on Argentina. You can follow the breadcrumb pathway as you click deeper into the content.

Eventually, you arrive at various documents that provide country information on Argentina; in this instance, a country/territory report from the publisher Standard & Poor (S&P). Click on the report name to reveal bibliographic details and a description of the document.

You can scroll down the document page to view its bibliographic details. There are also many access options on this page. There is a link to the full text, the file can be downloaded quickly and there are options for saving it to your MyEBSCO account, citing it, and sharing it as described elsewhere in this guide.

Searching for content within different publication types

You can search for content within specific secondary research publication types. You can enter your search terms in the search box on the home page of Business Source Ultimate and then filter by source type. You can set the publication types you are interested in, and then click apply. Additionally, applying the full text filter is useful so that the complete document can be retrieved instantly.

You can also use advanced search to look for content in Business Source Ultimate and EconLit. This works in the same way as the other Ebscohost databases that UCL subscribes to. You can consult the guidance on advanced search elsewhere in this guide.
