Types of periodical publications

Academic journals are used to disseminate scholarly information that relates to a particular academic discipline. They are aimed at researchers and are often peer-reviewed, which means that articles are evaluated by experts in the field before publication to ensure the information in them is accurate and well presented.

Published on a daily basis, the focus of newspapers is news items. They are typically wide in scope. An example of newspaper is The Guardian

You can access newspapers at UCL by:

Some newspapers are available in print or on microfilm. Back issues are kept at Stores and you can request them in Explore.

SSEES Library provides online access to many historic and current newspapers from Central and Eastern Europe. Examples include The Moscow times, Vesti Respubliki. At SSEES Library, the current year issues of print newspapers are found in the Current Periodicals section on the Lower Ground floor.

Trade publications are usually published by a special group, learned society or professional organisation and aimed at people working in a specific industry. An example of a trade publication is Slavic & East European Information Resources.

At the IOE Library, trade publications include journals aimed specifically at young people, such as those published by Philip Allan.

Magazine are generally printed on glossy paper (but can also be available online). They are aimed at a more general audience than academic journals and can include opinions and news items too. An example of magazine is the Times Educational Supplement.

At SSEES Library, printed magazines are held in the Periodicals section on the Lower Ground floor of the library. Examples include Ogonek, PolitykaÉlet és irodalom: irodalmi és politikai hetilap.
