A subject guide to library resources for students and staff in the Faculty of Medical Sciences including the UCL Medical School and Eastman Dental Institute

Clinical Support Tools

There are a number of useful clinical support tools available. These include:

BMJ Best Practice

The BMJ Best Practice App provides access to over 1000 conditions. The information is broken down into handy sections, including prevention, diagnosis, and management. The app also includes more than 250 interactive medical calculators.

You can set up a personal account by accessing BMJ Best Practice via the UCL Library Databases A-Z or from a UCL networked computer (including the remote desktop or access via VPN), then sign in to the app with these credentials to download content. NHS Staff should use OpenAthens

Remote access rights are granted for the remaining duration of your time at UCL, or for 6 months (whichever is shorter). If your subscription is still live and you want to renew your remote access, login from a UCL desktop (as above) and your remote access will refresh. NHS users can access BMJ Best Best Practice as long as their OpenAthens account is active.

UpToDate

The UpToDate app provides answers to your clinical questions anytime, anywhere. It provides access to the full UpToDate content including almost 12000 topics, 9300 graded recommendations and 6500 unique drug monographs. Search over an internet connection and bookmark topics for offline access.

UpToDate is only available to staff at selected NHS trusts. Please contact your home library for more details.

Another type of resource you’re likely to use a great deal in a clinical setting is that providing drug prescribing information. In this country, clinicians use the British National Formulary; a reference book containing information and advice on prescribing and pharmacology.

All NHS staff are entitled to use the app or the NICE Website. UCL Students should use MedicinesComplete
