LibrarySkills@UCL: Searching for information

A guide to search techniques and developing a search strategy for assignments, literature reviews and research.

Searching for information

Identifying information to inform your work requires search skills in order to:

  • develop an effective search strategy utilising standard search techniques;
  • ensure that search strategy is suited to the purpose of your search;
  • ensure you retrieve a comprehensive yet manageable set of results;
  • enable you to review and refine your search.

"Finding the right scholarly literature is absolutely vital and is crucial to virtually all student assignments. Use Explore to find readings that will allow you to look at your topic from an angle that your tutor may not have anticipated."
