Best practice guidance: library skills videos

A guide to creating library skills videos

Adding videos to Moodle

If you wish to include video in Moodle, there are two options.

  1. Upload the video as a media resource within Moodle
  2. Embed the video in a Moodle page

If you upload the video as a media resource, the page will display a link which will open the video resource in a new window. This might be helpful if it fits better with the flow of the page. The image below from the 2019 eXperience eXchange Moodle course illustrates this:

If you embed the video, it will be displayed on the page itself.

If uploading a video to a Moodle lesson, embedding the video on the page is the preferred method.

Embedding videos in Moodle

Embedding videos is the preferred method for Moodle lessons in the LibrarySkills@UCL Moodle course.

Videos should be uploaded to Media Central.

  • Go to Media Central and copy the embed code of the video.
  • Ensure editing is turned on in Moodle.
  • In the editor for the page where you wish to display the video, click on the html code icon </>
  • Paste the embed code into the box and save.

You should now see the video appear on the page itself.
