Best practice guidance: library skills videos

A guide to creating library skills videos

Adding videos to Moodle

If you wish to include video in Moodle, there are two options.

Embed or link to a video in a Moodle page

This is the Library Services preferred method for embedding videos from Mediacentral into Moodle in order to ensure effective administration of LCCOS Mediacentral content.

To embed a video in a Moodle 'Page' or 'Text and media area':

  • From the menu option button for the Page or Text and Media Area, select Edit Settings.
  • To insert a link to the video, type the title of the video, highlight it, click on the Link icon, paste in the URL and click Update link.
  • To embed the video:
    • In the Text editor toolbar, select Tools, then < > Source Code.
    • Place your cursor in the HTML code where you wish the video to appear and paste the embed code.
    • Click Save, and the video should display within the Text editor.
  • Finish editing the Page or Text and Media Area and then click Save and return to course.
Considerations:
  • Check the video size of embedded videos to ensure appropriate display within the page.
  • Review accessibility requirements to ensure usability for all viewers.

Upload a video as a media resource within Moodle

If you upload the video as a media resource, the page will display a link which will open the video resource in a new Moodle window. We prefer colleagues not to use this method because the video is not findable in Mediacentral. Instead, insert a link to the video in Mediacentral, other than by the owner in their 'My content' list.
