Best Practices for UCL LibGuides

Top 5 tips for subject guide owners - Summer 2023

Decorative image1. Find out how your guides are being used

Did you know you can find out how many times individual pages in your guides have been viewed, how users have discovered your pages, and the number of times an individual asset (such as a web link or database) has been viewed with your guide?

See how your guides and the content within them are being used, with our guide to LibGuides statistics for guide owners.

2. Ensure your guide is easy to find and use

We’ve developed new guidance on how to rename your guide, which you may want to do if, for example, it expands to cover more than one department, or additional subject areas.

3. Check your wording

Are you using clear and concise language in your guide? Consider whether a broad term like ‘resources’ is more or less appropriate to users than a narrower one like ‘databases’. Are you just talking about newspapers and magazines, or journals more generally?

Consistent terminology and vocabulary across subject guides is important, so that our information for users remains clear and accessible. Use the new and very short glossary for subject guides to check that you're using terms that everyone can understand.

4. Discover new assets for your guide

Find and choose new reusable assets that will enhance your guide by browsing the reusable asset guide. For example:

Thinking of adding new content to your guide that other colleagues might also want to use? Consider creating it in the reusable asset guide and letting us know. Our best practices guide includes instructions on how to add reusable content to your own guide.

5. Use the link checker

Make sure that there are no broken links in your guide, using the link checker.

And last but not least, a reminder that if you add any new content boxes to your guide, you will need to resubmit it for review again. Our reviewers usually respond very quickly, but please allow up to a few days, in case we’re on leave or juggling other commitments. You can avoid delays by adding a note for reviewers when you submit your guide, letting them know what has been added (and where it is in the guide) so they can quickly and easily see the changes they need to review and approve.
