A guide to information literacy and library skills for NHS staff from Trusts supported by UCL Library Services, to inform clinical practice, study and research.

Library skills for NHS staff

This guide provides training materials and guidance for NHS staff at NHS Trusts supported by UCL Library Services, to support the development of information literacy and library skills to inform clinical practice, study and research.

UCL biomedical and health libraries offer training and services to NHS staff at UCL's associated NHS Trusts to support you in patient care, clinical audit and guideline development, keeping up to date, research or teaching activities.

Evidence-based practice and research follows a process; consider each of the 5 steps below to:

  • identify an information need, know which resources to use to identify evidence and plan your searches;
  • search for evidence to support that need,;
  • evaluate evidence to ensure it is reliable, valid and relevant.
  • acknowledge the sources of the evidence and keep a record of evidence used;
  • communicate the results of research and apply them in clinical practice.

Although the process is linear, you will usually find you need to revisit steps as you uncover more information.
