Library Services
The Hub includes hundred of e-books which NHS staff can access with an OpenAthens account.
Make sure you sign in to the Hub first to see what's available to you.
You can search generally by keyword, or you can look for specific books by choosing Title or Author from the drop-down menu by the search box, if you prefer.
Example: looking for an e-book containing the term 'perioperative' in the title. Using the Basic Search form, change the 'where to search' drop-down from keyword to title. In the search terms box, type in the term 'perioperative', and then click on Search.
You can then limit the type of record by selecting 'books' from the source type options:
You will find both books and book chapters with the word perioperative in the title.
Explore is UCL Library Services' single search tool for finding journals, books, full-text articles, archive material and much more. Whether you're looking for items on your reading list or information for a project or research, you'll find it in Explore and you get instant access to any full-text to which we subscribe.
You can access Explore in several ways:
This video gives an overview of what you can find using Explore, as well as basic instructions on how to carry out a search (3 mins 44 secs).
If the book you need is not available from the Hub, NHS staff are also able to access e-books from UCL's collections. Due to licensing restrictions, this is only possible from dedicated computers called Explore Access Points found inside the Library. NHS staff are not able to access UCL ebooks remotely.
To search UCL's collections, use Explore, UCL's library catalogue. If UCL has the ebook you need, you may come in to the Library to consult it at an Explore Access Point. If this is not possible, in some circumstances we can email you a PDF of a single chapter.
