ReadingLists@UCL

A guide for UCL teaching and academic staff.

Organising your reading list, cut and paste and moving content between lists

On this page you will find:

How do I use Cut and Paste?

You can use Cut and Paste to quickly move items or entire sections within your reading list from one location to another.

To move individual items:

  • Navigate to the section containing the item you want to move.
  • Select the item and click on the the three dots at end of the item box then from the drop-down menu select Cut.

  • Navigate to the section where you want to insert the item and click Paste.
  • The item has now been moved. Don't forget to publish the list.

Moving entire sections from one place to another, within your reading list, works in the same way as moving an item:

  • Navigate to the heading of the section you want to move, then at the end of the box select the three dots and from the drop down menu select Cut.

  • Once you have selected Cut you will notice that the line showing Paste and Cancel moves with your cursor/mouse.
  • Navigate to the place in your reading list you want to insert the section then click Paste. It can be tricky to find the exact spot - see the picture below - but generally you will see a plain line in between sections.
  • TIP: You can check that you have pasted the section in the right place and as you intended, through checking the table of contents link at the top right of the reading list. Any indentations in the table of contents indicate a sub-section.

  • You can also move a section into another section, in this case instead of a plain line you will see the name of the section you are pasting into.
  • TIP: You can check that you have pasted the section in the right place and as you intended, through checking the table of contents link at the top right of the reading list. Any indentations in the table of contents indicate a sub-section.

How do I copy one list to another list?

You can copy the full list of items and structure of one reading list into a new one. This might be useful if, for example, you have a new module or a change of a module course code but want to keep the readings from an old module.

  • Login to ReadingLists@UCL and navigate to My Lists.
  • Go to the list you want to copy then click on the three vertical dots at the end.
  • Select Copy to a new list a new window will open.

  • In the new window give a new Title to the list.
  • Then select the relevant Academic Year from the drop-down menu.

  • Just below the Academic year box, you will notice a pre-ticked box: keep it ticked as this is is to instruct the software to copy and keep the structure, hierarchy etc. etc. from the old list to the new one.
  • Click Save. You will see the new list appearing as Draft, make any edits if needed and then Publish the list to make it visible.

How do I copy small amounts of content between one list and another list?

You can copy small amounts of content between online reading lists. This might be a few resources or resources within a section on a list. This differs to copying a whole list.

Please note that you can only copy bookmarks (resources) on a list to another list, and each individual resource must be copied individually. You cannot mark up resources in bulk and then copy them to paste them subsequently in a new list. Similarly, you cannot achieve this task by copying a section. Each resource within a section must be copied separately.

Copying resources from one list to another will be helpful if the readings in a section are the same for two different courses. You will not have to re-bookmark resources from UCL Explore, the library catalogue, or another source.

To copy resources from one list to another list, please follow these step-by-step instructions:-

  • Login to ReadingLists@UCL and navigate to My Lists.
  • Make sure that you have editing rights for both the online reading list you want to copy from and the list you want to add resources to. If you do not have editing rights, please e-mail readinglists@ucl.ac.uk to request access.
  • Find the online reading list where the resources you want to copy are located. Pull up the list so that you can view it.
  • Navigate to the first resource you want to copy.
  • Click on the three vertical dots at the end of the resource.

  • A drop-down menu appears after clicking on the three vertical dots. Please next click on Add to My Bookmarks.

  • This action adds the resource to your collection of bookmarks within your ReadingLists@UCL profile. You can optionally verify this by scrolling to the top of the page to view the main horizontal toolbar of the system, and clicking on My Bookmarks. You will see there the newly added resource at the top of your bookmarks list.

  • Find and navigate to the online reading list where you want to add the resource you copied from the source reading list.
  • Add the resource on the destination reading list in the usual way, by clicking on add resource.

  • This adds the copied resource to the destination reading list.

  • Repeat all the above steps if you need to copy other resources from the source reading list to the destination reading list. Remember that you will have to copy each one individually.
  • When you have finished, remember to publish your list so that students see the changes on the destination reading list.
