ReadingLists@UCL

A guide for UCL teaching and academic staff.

'Reading list' activity tool

This integration enables you to embed a particular list, or parts of your list, within the body of your Moodle course.

  • Tutors find this helpful when they wish to highlight a few resources at a time, for example weekly readings, in specific Moodle sections.
  • To use this tool you will need to have arranged first to set up your reading list and ensured that the list is organised in sections (e.g. Week 1, Week 2, or by topic).
  • Note this requires some maintenance in advance of each new academic year (see our Annual Rollover guidance).
  • This is an optional integration.

How to connect your reading list to Moodle using the Reading List activity tool

Please make sure that your online reading list is finalised, published, and organised into sections.

Navigate to Moodle, log in and find your course.

Toggle the edit button on so that it turns blue. Click on the week of your course where you want to embed your section or list. Click on add activity or resource button.

Choose Reading Lists LTI.1.3 (NEW) tile from the list of tools that appears,

Click on the select content button. Moodle will add an activity name once you have embedded your section list. You can edit this later.

You may be asked to authenticate at this point. If this is the case, please click on the start button to log in.

Start to type the module code or title of the reading list in the search box. Find the reading list that you want. Choose whether to embed a whole list or only a section of the list. Click on either the select section button or the embed list button on the right-hand side.

If you want to embed a section, find the required section in the list of sections and then click on the embed section button on the right-hand side.

With content selected, you are now returned to the main screen for the Reading List activity tool. You will see that the activity name box has been filled in automatically. You can overwrite this if you wish so that you can describe better the activity name. This description is what will be displayed on the main page of Moodle and what students will click on to access embedded readings. For example, you can re-describe according to the topic of the reading list section:- 'week 1 reading', 'week 2 reading', or films by a particular director. Similarly, you can overwrite with the module code and the module title information in the activity name box if you are embedding the whole reading list. When you have made and typed your choice, you should click on Save and Display.

After clicking on Save and Display, you are taken to the page of the Moodle resource from where students will access the embedded readings. You will see the embedded reading section that has been pulled in from the corresponding online reading list. You can also check that it has embedded correctly through clicking on, for example, 'week 1', or 'week 2', or however the Moodle topic is named, at the top of the screen, to ensure that it looks correct.

You can now also check the embedded readings link again from the main Moodle page of your course.

Navigate back to the main Moodle page and go to the week where you embedded the readings. Click on the readings link that you created to display the reading resources. You can also use the action menu, the three vertical dots on the right-hand side, to access further options.
