Guide to using EndNote reference management software

Inserting citations from within Word

  • Place the cursor in the place where you wish to insert a citation in your Word document.
  • Click on the Insert Citations icon at the left of the EndNote toolbar.
  • Enter a search term to locate your reference, e.g. the author’s surname or a keyword from the title.
  • Select the relevant reference, holding the Ctrl key on your keyboard to select more than one reference, and click on Insert.

Your reference is entered as a citation in your document and the full reference will appear at the end of your document as part of an automatically generated reference list.

Inserting citations from within EndNote

  • Place the cursor in the place where you wish to insert a citation in your Word document.
  • Go to your EndNote Library and highlight the reference you wish to import. Hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard to import more than one reference.
  • Click on the Insert Citation icon on the toolbar within EndNote.

Your reference is entered as a citation in your document and the full reference will appear at the end of your document as part of an automatically generated reference list.
