EndNote

Guide to using EndNote reference management software

Navigating EndNote Desktop

The EndNote screen is split into three main areas or panes, in the centre, on the left and on the right:

  • Centre pane - the pane in the centre of the screen lists your references. You can sort them by clicking on the column headers. The icons across the top of the central pane are shortcuts to popular commands, which are also accessible from the menus.
  • Right pane - double click any reference to open a pane on the right of the screen. This pane has three tabs across the top and a Preview pane at the bottom of the Summary tab, which can be opened using the green arrow:
    • Summary tab: offers a quick view of all fields for the reference that is highlighted in the centre pane and the option to add a PDF.
    • Edit tab: allows you to change the data in any field.
    • PDF tab: displays any attached PDF.
    • Preview pane: Open with the green arrow at the bottom of the Summary tab to see how the reference that is highlighted will look in a range of citation styles.
  • Left pane - the pane on the left of the screen displays folders, groups, and search tools (and sync status, if you choose to sync your library to EndNote Online).
