This guide introduces the Harvard referencing style and includes examples of citations.

Religious text

To be made up of:

  • Name of religious text (not in italics).
  • Chapter/Surah:Verse.
  • Book version (if applicable).
  • Date (in round brackets and only required where applicable in the reference list).
  • Location: Publisher.

In-text citation: 

(The Holy Bible: Isaiah. 40:11)

(Qur'an: 14:38)

(Torah: Proverbs. 24:16)

If citing consecutive chapters, illustrate this with a hyphen:

(The Holy Bible: Isaiah. 40-43)

If citing consecutive verses, include the first and last verses and separate with a hyphen:

(The Holy Bible: Isaiah. 40:11-17)

Page numbers are not required for religious or sacred texts.
