Guide to using Web of Science, a multidisciplinary citation database

KCI - Korean Journals Database

The KCI - Korean Journals Database is a specialised index for searching journals published in South Korea, both in English and in Korean. It  is based on the Korea Citation Index maintained by the National Research Foundation of Korea, and covers a wide range of disciplines but with a strong regional focus.

To access it, select Korean Journals Database from the drop-down menu on the Advanced Search screen:

You can then search using standard Web of Science methods - the default search is topic, covering title, abstract, & keywords, and we recommend this is the most effective method for most searches. It can be searched in English or Korean; for articles published in Korean, titles, keywords and abstracts are translated into English and can be searched. Articles published in English (or another language) do not have Korean translations, so searching only in Korean will potentially miss some papers.

The standard Web of Science sorting and filters are available for your results, but it does not have the full range of metadata fields; for example, you cannot search by affiliation, and the subject classification is by 'Research Areas', which are more limited than the standard Web of Science categories.

The database contains about two million articles, three quarters of which are published in Korean and the remainder primarily published in English, and almost all from 2002 onwards. A significant amount of these papers are not indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection, so this can be a very useful database for a search focused on a Korean topic. However, we would recommend searching in the Core Collection as well, as Korean research published in international journals may not be listed in the KCI database.
