Research Commons is a database of publications drawn from open metadata sources such as CrossRef and OpenAlex. It includes a wider selection of material than the main Web of Science database, including a significantly greater proportion of material from the global south, and in the arts and humanities. Papers in Research Commons have citation links to and from papers in the Core Collection.
To access it, select Research Commons from the drop-down menu on the Advanced Search screen:
You can then search using standard Web of Science methods - the default search is topic, covering title, abstract, & keywords, and we recommend this is the most effective method for most searches.
The standard Web of Science sorting and filters are available for your results, but metadata is more limited than for the Core Collection - some fields may not be available or may not be comprehensively indexed. In particular, it does not have subject classification, and affiliation data is known to be incomplete.
The material on Research Commons is not always peer-reviewed, and as such Research Commons is one of only two databases which are not automatically searched as part of the "all databases" search in Web of Science. However, you can add Research Commons results back into to these searches if you wish.
