Guide to using EndNote reference management software

Adding references

In this section we look at the various ways to add references to your EndNote library. The method(s) you use will depend on how you work and manage your research.

Where possible you are advised to obtain references from online sources, such as databases or publisher's websites. There are two ways to get references from online sources:

In this section we also cover:

  • Adding a reference manually: This is necessary in some cases where you cannot find the reference from an online source.
  • Editing a reference: Always check your added references to make sure they have imported correctly and have no errors. If you need to alter any information in the references you may edit it.
  • Importing PDFs: Automatically generate records in your library with the full text attached.
  • Using the EndNote Click browser extension: With this browser extension, it is possible to add references to your library via EndNote Desktop or EndNote Online.
  • Using the capture bookmarklet: With an EndNote Online account it is possible to 'capture' references displayed in a Web browser, to add to your library via EndNote Desktop or EndNote Online.
