Mendeley Desktop

Guide to using Mendeley Desktop reference management and social citation sharing software

Can I include references in the bibliography which I have not cited in the body of my document?

If you would like to create a stand-alone bibliography you can do this directly from Mendeley Desktop:

  • Select all the records you wish to add to your list, from your Mendeley Library.
  • Right click or go to the Edit menu, and select Copy as, then Formatted citation.
  • Paste into your Word document.

If you need to intersperse non-cited references into a bibliography which has already been created from references cited in the text, you will need to work on an unformatted copy of your document. See Preparing a paper for publishing / TurnitIn . Because this involves using a copy without any links back to Mendeley, it is recommended that you do this last.

When I click on 'insert citation' I get an error message in Word

Try uninstalling and re-installing the Cite-O-Matic toolbar.

  • Make sure that Word and Outlook are closed.
  • Go to Mendeley Desktop. Go to the Tools menu and select Uninstall Mendeley Word Plug-in.
  • Go to the Tools menu again and select Install Mendeley Word Plug-in.
  • Open Word and try again to insert a citation.

Which citation style should I choose?

For university assignments, refer to your lecturer or tutor as they style to choose often depends on the subject you are studying and the preferences of the academic staff.

If you are submitting a manuscript for a journal, refer to the author guidelines provided by the journal you intend to submit to.

I want to use Harvard but it isn't listed - how can I use Harvard?

You could use the Cite Them Right version of Harvard.

Alternatively, you could search for a different version of Harvard and install the style. Many universities have created their own versions of Harvard and you might find one to suit you.

From the drop-down list of styles in the Word toolbar, click on More styles.

How can I edit citation styles or create my own?

Editing or creating citation styles is a fairly advanced procedure and can be fairly complex. The guide below will help if you wish to make small changes.

My bibliography has got lots of dates and URLs which I don't want to appear!

You can remove URLs from a bibliography:

  • Open Mendeley Desktop.
  • Go to the View menu, select Citation Styles, then More Styles.
  • Change the option  Include URLs and Date Accessed in Bibliographies to Only for Webpages.

How can I cite in OSCOLA style?

Can I add citations and references to Word using my online Mendeley Library?

It is possible to create a bibliography in Word using Mendeley Web. For details see this Mendeley Support page.

Note that "MS Word’s citation system is not the same system used by Mendeley Desktop. Using both on the same document will yield two sets of citations and two bibliographies".

Word keeps crashing

You may experience problems if you are using a computer which has both EndNote and Mendeley plugins installed in Word.

If the Mendeley plug-in is causing problems, try disabling the EndNote plugin:

  • Open the File menu in Word.
  • Select Options then Add-Ins.
  • From the Manage list at the foot of the window select COM Add-ins and click Go.
  • Unselect the EndNote Cite While you Write Add-in, Click OK.

Problems installing the Mendeley Word add-in?

If you are using Office 2016 downloaded from UCL, you may find that you are unable to install the Mendeley Cite-O-Matic or Mendeley Cite plugins. UCL has a policy which prevents third party Office add-ons. In such an instance you may get the message 'We can't load this add-in because we couldn't connect to the catalog'.

There are some alternative options for working with your Mendeley library in Word:
