Mendeley

Guide to using Mendeley reference management and social citation sharing software

Which citation style should I choose?

For university assignments, refer to your lecturer or tutor as they style to choose often depends on the subject you are studying and the preferences of the academic staff.

If you are submitting a manuscript for a journal, refer to the author guidelines provided by the journal you intend to submit to.

How can I cite in OSCOLA style?

Can I add citations and references to Word using my online Mendeley Library?

It is possible to create a bibliography in Word using Mendeley Web. For details see this Mendeley Support page.

Note that "MS Word’s citation system is not the same system used by Mendeley. Using both on the same document will yield two sets of citations and two bibliographies".

Why does Mendeley Cite keep asking me to log in over and over again?

Sometimes Mendeley Cite gets stuck in a login loop. You enter your username and password, it appears to accept them, but instead of opening your library it jumps straight back to the ‘Get Started’ screen. This usually happens when Word is holding onto an old sign-in token or the Office add-ins browser hasn’t updated properly.

This can often be fixed by making sure everything is fully up to date. Try the following, trying logging in again after each step:

  1. Click on the arrow to the right of the menu options in the Mendeley Cite pane and then select Reload.
  2. Log out of Word and log in again. This refreshes your Office account connection and can force Office to re-sync admin-managed add-ins.
  3. Update Microsoft Word / Office 365:
    1. In Word, go to the File menu and then Account.
    2. Select Update Options and then Update Now.
  4. Update Mendeley Cite:
    1. In the Home tab of Word, click on Add-ins.
    2. Search for Mendeley Cite and follow on-screen instructions if an update is available.

Once Word and Mendeley are updated, restart Word and try opening Mendeley Cite again.

Note: If you are using a remote desktop, e.g. Desktop@UCL Anywhere, it can have slightly out-of-sync WebView components, so if the above steps do not work immediately, a second login attempt may work.

Mendeley Cite won't load and I'm getting a 'blocked add-in' message.

There are various reasons why you might be getting a 'blocked add-in' message:

  1. If you are using Word via Microsoft 365 from UCL installed on your own computer, you must be logged in to Word with your UCL account in order for the add-in to work. If you are logged in with a personal account, go to the File menu in Word, then Account and select Sign out of all accounts. Then log back in with your UCL account.
  2. The add-ins store may be blocked on your device. To check this, from the Home tab in Word, click on Add-ins. If the store does not open, it may be blocked. Try logging out of Word and logging in again (with your UCL credentials).
  3. Antivirus software on your device may be blocking add-ins. Check the settings in the antivirus software and try turning off 'Office add-in protection', 'WebView isolation' or 'Script blocking'.
  4. Corrupted add-in components can make Word think the Add-ins store is blocked. To fix, make sure you have closed Word and any other Office applications. Go to Control panel, then Programs, then Programs and Features. Find 'Microsoft 365 Apps'. Choose Modify, and then Online Repair. This resets all add-in functionality.

Why can't I install the Mendeley Cite-O-Matic or Mendeley Cite plugin in Word?

If you are using Office 2016 downloaded from UCL, you may find that you are unable to install the Mendeley Cite-O-Matic or Mendeley Cite plugins. UCL has a policy which prevents third party Office add-ons. In such an instance you may get the message 'We can't load this add-in because we couldn't connect to the catalog'.

There are some alternative options for working with your Mendeley library in Word:
