Mendeley

Guide to using Mendeley reference management and social citation sharing software

Importing PDFs to your Mendeley library

If you have PDFs saved which you want to add to the library, Mendeley Reference Manager can create a bibliographic record from the PDF. There are two ways to add the PDFs to your library:

  1. Drag and drop: Open up the folder where you have saved your PDFs and display it so you can see your Mendeley Reference Manager library behind it. Click on one of the PDFs and drag it into the references pane of your library.
  2. Add files: Click on the +Add new button at the top of the left-hand pane; select File(s) from computer, and navigate to the folder where the PDF is stored. Select a PDF and click on Open.

Bibliographic details may not always import correctly. When you view this article, you can confirm the details are correct, or if information is incorrect or missing you can correct this. See Editing a reference.

Attaching a PDF to a stored reference

You can attach the full text document (typically PDF format) to an existing reference in your library, by proceeding as follows:

  • Highlight the reference, for which you wish to attach its full text document, so the Info panel appears
  • In the Info panel, click on the '+' next to FILES
  • Browse to where the file is on your computer, and click on Open
  • The file will be attached to the reference, as seen by an icon to the right of the reference.
