Library Skills: live online training guide

Guidance, best practices and suggestions on how to design and deliver live online library skills training.

Elements to consider when creating a session description

  • Format – indicate that the session is online. Indicate whether the session is recorded or live.
  • Terminology (tba) - e.g. webinar, live session, online session, virtual.
  • Start time
  • Duration
  • Platform – clearly indicate which platform will be used for the session. Include links to the support sites for the chosen platform. Indicate which support material is a session pre-requisite, as appropriate.
  • Session content – include a description of the session itself. Include a brief description of the content of any asynchronous material that is available, especially if it is a pre-requisite.
  • Pre-requisites – include a reminder where applicable that the pre-requisite material is mandatory. Include a link to the full information for any asynchronous pre-requisite sessions. The pre-requisite may just be an indication of the type of user the session is suitable for.
  • Caveats – be clear about what the session does not offer. E.g. indicate if the session will / will not allow for answering individual problems, indicate routes for 1:1 assistance.
  • Capacity – what is the maximum number of attendees?
  • Cancellation – is there a minimum number of bookings that would cause cancellation of the session? If so, make it clear the possibility of cancellation due to low bookings.
  • Joining instructions – include on which platform the session will be delivered and a link to the joining instructions on the LIbrarySkills@UCL webpages.
  • Other sources of support – add a link to any relevant guides relating to the topic.
  • Alternative dates – add a link to the LibCal listing if there are other dates when the same session is happening.
