Library Skills training online

A guide to share best practice and support UCL library staff in designing and delivering online library skills training materials and activities.

LibWizard Quizzes

LibWizard Quizzes is an easy-to-use tool which allows you to ask quiz questions, such as before or after a session or integrated into asynchronous learning, for example to know more about learners, to test their knowledge, to assess what they have learnt and much more. Advantages of LibWizard Quizzes include the ability for anyone to create quizzes through a browser and the option to create a certificate of completion for participants. For help choosing which quiz software best suits your need see our quiz comparison table.

Creating a new quiz is quite straightforward and you will find full instructions on this page. Whenever possible, it’s recommended that you use the template quiz, as this is already formatted in the correct way.

As you build your quiz, you can also set up conditional rules, for example to enable the certificate of completion only over a certain score.

If you prefer to have a standalone certificate of completion, instructions on how to do this are below. Once again, it’s a good idea to try and use the template for the standalone certificate of completion rather than creating one from scratch.

Creating a new quiz

To create a new quiz:

  • Log in to LibWizard Quizzes and click on Create New
  • Select whether to start from a 'Blank Slate', or to base your quiz on an existing quiz, such as the 'TEMPLATE Library Skills Quiz', which includes suggested opening and closing text and a certificate of completion.
  • In the 'Name' field, add the name of your quiz.
  • In the 'Friendly URL link' field enter words to make up a friendly URL. Note: For best practice, include hyphens between words in the friendly URL.
  • Also consider adding some information in the Description field. This can be useful for colleagues who may be thinking about reusing your quiz as a starting point for their own.
  • Click Save.

You can now start creating your quiz.

The left side of the screen displays various form elements you can select. This section has two tabs: Fields and Bank.
Fields include different types of questions to choose from, while Bank includes already created questions to reuse.
The ‘Workpad - content area’ (the main section on the screen) is where you’ll build your quiz.

  • At the top of the ‘Workpad – content area’ you have the option to add a welcome screen. You can use this space to give a welcome message or any instructions to users before they start the quiz.
  • The main body of the content area is where you can add the questions.
  • Select the type of question you’d like from the menu on the left side of the screen (Fields tab). Drag and drop it to the content area.
  • A pop up window will display and it will include three sections:
    • Display properties, where you can enter your question and the correct answer;
    • Answer properties, where you can specify answer choices and decide which messages users will see if they give the right or wrong answers.
    • Advanced customisation, which includes advanced formatting options for question fields. You are unlikely to need to alter these.
  • At the end click Save

Alternatively you can take advantage of our bank of previously used questions, which can be found under the Bank tab in the left side section.

  • Click on the + sign next to the question you’d like to add. This will bring up a pop up window like the one mentioned above.
  • All the questions you add will be displayed in the content area in the order in which you have added them. If you’d like to move a question up or down, click and drag the question to the correct position.
  • You also have the option to make further changes to a question by clicking on the Edit (pencil and square) button on the right side of it.
  • If you’d like to delete a question, click on the Delete button on the right side of it.
  • If you would like your quiz to display on multiple pages, you can add a Page Break by dragging a 'Page Break' from the fields section to the appropriate place in the content area.
  • When you’ve added all your questions, you can edit the Page Break immediately below the questions by clicking on the Edit button. Options include adding a short name for your own reference and changing the text that appears on the 'Back' and 'Submit' buttons.
  • Click Save

Below the content area, click to add a Thank you screen and a Certificate of completion. If you created your quiz using the TEMPLATE Library Skills Quiz, you can edit the pre-existing thank you screen and pre-formatted Certificate of completion as required.

To create a Certificate of completion from scratch:

  • Move the toggle button to Active.
  • It’s a good idea to enable the Certificate of completion only over a certain score. In order to do this, move the Display certificate based on the threshold toggle button to the right to activate it.  At this point you can set up the minimum score needed, which can be measured either in grade percentage or number of correct questions.

Please note that you can also create a certificate of completion as a standalone document. For guidance on how to do this, see Creating a standalone certificate of completion.

Creating a standalone certificate of completion or certificate of attendance

LibWizard Quizzes can be used to create online certificates of completion or attendance for any type of learning material or course which can be downloaded as a PDF, printed or emailed to the learner or any other email address. UCL templates are available to create these.

To create a certificate of completion or attendance for a particular learning material or course:

  • Log in to LibWizard Quizzes and click on the Standalone certificates of completion folder.
  • Click on Create new and select the appropriate template ('TEMPLATE: Standalone certificate of completion for online tutorials' or 'TEMPLATE: Certificate of attendance') from the Start with drop-down menu.
  • In the 'Name' field, enter the name of the online tutorial or training session exactly as you want it to appear on the certificate.
  • Click on Save.
  • Click on Edit "Welcome Screen".
  • Replace the bold text 'enter name of tutorial here' or 'enter name of session here' with the name of your online tutorial or training session title accordingly, and click on Save.
  • If you wish you may delete the 'Overall satisfaction rating 1-5' question, although we recommend retaining it as it may encourage feedback we otherwise might not receive. Otherwise, click on the Edit field button and replace the relevant text with the name of your tutorial or session.
  • Click on Edit "Thank you screen" / Edit "Certificate of completion".
  • In the 'Thank You Screen' tab, edit the text as you want it to display at the top of the screen above the certificate. We suggest keeping the text asking people to complete a feedback form, entering the name of your tutorial or session and adding a link to the relevant feedback form.
  • In the 'Certificate of completion' tab, you will see that the name, title of tutorial and date are automatically populated using 'standard tokens' or 'field tokens' which appear within multiple curly brackets, and the key for which appears in the right hand pane. You must change the field token code for the 'name' so that it takes the information from your certificate of completion quiz. Scroll down so you can see the 'field tokens' in the right hand pane and click on the token for 'Your name' to copy it to your clipboard. Then paste it in the certificate of completion, replacing the code that is there already. Make sure it is in bold so it will display in bold in the final certificate.
  • NHS sites providing certificates for materials or sessions local to their site may wish to add an NHS logo to the bottom right of the certificate.
  • Click on Save.
  • Click on Preview and enter a test name to ensure the certificate is displaying as you would like it to. Please note, where users opt to email the certificate, the text in the email includes terminology about carrying out a quiz and 'Certificate of completion', which cannot be changed to 'Certificate of attendance'. The wording on the certificate linked from the email will be as it displays on the screen.

You can see how many people have generated a certificate from the 'Submission' field in the list of quizzes, and can view names by clicking on View reports from the editing screen for that quiz. If you delete entries, the user will no longer be able to access their certificate of completion by linking from an email, so we recommend you do not delete any entries for the most recent 12 month period.
