Library Skills training online

A guide to share best practice and support UCL library staff in designing and delivering online library skills training materials and activities.

Online materials and self-paced training (asynchronous)

Asynchronous training can take a variety of formats, from written information on a web page, to videos and interactive content. The best format will depend on the purpose and content of the training materials. In designing online skills materials you will need to consider which platform to deliver it through, and the format of the individual learning objects.

Use the sections of this guide to determine which tools to use for the format of the training you decide to deliver.

Choosing tools for asynchronous learning

Which asynchronous learning tool should you use?

Before you begin, take some time to consider:

  • How much time do you and your collaborators have for this?
  • How confident are you with the tools, or how willing are you to learn new ones?
  • Where do you need to put the tool once it’s finished?
  • Who else need to edit it and will they be able to maintain it if you’re not around?
  • What are your learners familiar with and how much will this be a factor? (for example does your resource need to ‘fit in’ with other online learning provided by their course team?)

Most importantly: no tool can replace good pedagogy. An effective, well designed lesson in a very simple format is far better than using fancy tech just because you can.
